The Fishes[2] are feral entities roaming the Purge Event in Dream BBQ.

Appearance

The Fishes have pale-yellow, fish-like bodies with purple markings on their fin, belly, and a belt pattern covered by beige U-shaped motifs. They possess a pair of human-like legs, which they use to both walk and propel them through the air. They harbor a brown arch shape on their back. Their heads are brown with big mouths filled with yellow, rectangular teeth. They have gray round eyes and thin yellow lines on their face. Two circular red eyes glow inside their mouth.

Overview

The Fishes appear during the second phase of the Purge Event. They seem to be former attendants at the Purge Event's first phase who were transformed by a pink liquid that filled the rooms. This happens to Ena too, who transforms into a Fish with her hat, which makes her the only distinguishable Fish.

All of the creatures are on a feeding frenzy and devour each other, as seen in the introduction to the second Purge Event phase. They are present in different rooms and display various animations. They either eat each other, dance, fly around, or get stuck on their back.

When Ena makes her way through the event, following the whistling of the Fishes, a giant Fish appears through one of the doorways, devouring her in one bite.

Cultural references and inspirations

A Nasca bottle that inspired the appearance of those creatures.
  • The Fishes are inspired by a decorated bottle representing an orca made by the Nasca people, an Andean society that lived in what is now the Ica region of Peru.[3]
    • The whistle sound leading the player in this level is sampled after actual orcas, but these matching inspirations are a coincidence. The ENA team thought this pottery was a fish and learned its true representation after making the sound effect.[4]
    • These inspirations are nodded to by the title of the music playing during the Purge Event's second phase, which is titled "ORCA".
